What are my responsibilities for tracking my employees’ food handler cards?

In states, cities and counties with mandated food handler training, regulatory agencies typically require employers maintain records documenting each employee has a valid food handler card/certificate. How do I know which employees need a card/certificate?

Each state and county can have slightly different requirements but if you handle, prepare, or serve food in an establishment that serves or sells food for human consumption, you will likely require a food handler card in mandated areas. Contact your local health department for further details on laws specific to your area.

States with mandated food handler training are required to undergo basic food safety training. For specific information you can refer to the State Requirements Map.
